MONTANA-8/24-9-

(2006-10-31)

8/24ぬいぐるみAfter we had dinner, we went to buy souvenirs. I took 6 days off to come to that trip, so I had to buy many souvenirs to my co-workers. There was a good gift shop in the hotel. The shop sold T-shits, hats, socks, bookmarks, cups, books and so many, many things. We looked around the gift shop. I was thinking what I would buy for my father. I wanted to buy a T-shirt, but the T-shirt that he wants to wear is difficult to find. I selected the T-shirts to Kiyomi and Rieko. That shop had many kinds of T-shirts, and some of them were typical type of souvenirs, but the others were really cute. I choose stuffed dolls to Yoshiko, Noriko and Akemi. I bought one big horn sheep and two mountain goats.
When I brought those stuffed dolls, Ito-chan asked me where I had gotten them. I pointed out and said, “Over there.”
And I bought thirty-bar chocolates. I had already decided what I would buy to my co-workers. The word ‘GLACIER’ was printed on the surface of the chocolate. I guessed everybody would know where I had been. I said to a clerk I wanted thirty chocolates.
She answered, “30??”
I said, “30”.
“30??”
“30.”
Finally, she started laughing and was really surprised.
She said it would be almost $70. Of course, I knew it, but I didn’t know how much $70 was. I also bought a paper bag. It was the same kind of paper bags that you can buy at souvenir shops in Japan.
Ito-chan bought a stuffed doll, too. I thought she would gave it to her nephew.
But Mike-san and Ito-chan gave it to me afterwards. It was really cute. Thank you! Mike-san and Ito-chan!!

After we went back to the room, we looked at the pictures that Mike-san had taken during the trip. He brought his computer. A digital camera is really convenient. Looking at the pictures was exciting, but we felt sleepy. We stopped watching, and fell asleep.

8/24ハックルベリーWe took a shower and had dinner at the hotel. There were two lounges and one restaurant in the hotel, and we had the dinner at the one of the lounges.
The restaurant faced to the lake, but the lounge where we had the dinner faced to the parking area. The view from the lounge was terrible.
I ordered Grilled Chicken Sandwich. Sandwich in my image is always thin sliced bread, but that sandwich seemed like a hamburger. My dinner was really good. Especially, French fries!! Ito-chan ordered Huckleberry Daiquiri for me.

8/24鳥We went back to our car. There were many shops around the parking area. That was the big difference from Glacier. That area seemed like a town. We ate an ice cream. Mike-san tasted some flavors. I ordered Maple Walnut ice cream. It was really sweet and good. The cost of ice cream was the almost same as Japanese cost. But the quantity was a big difference. The Canadian size was triple of Japanese size. Since I came to the United States, big meals were always annoying me. But I was jealous of the quantity of the ice cream.
We ate the ice creams at the lakeside. A white water bird approached to me. I guess he wanted to eat the ice cream.

8/24しかThe Canadian side of the national park was called Waterton Lakes National Park. I couldn’t find any difference between the Waterton and Glacier. I could see the same kind of mountain. I think if I hadn’t seen many beautiful mountains in America, I would be impressed. But we’d already seemed beautiful views in the United States. So, the view in Canada didn’t be special.

We walked along the lakeside. Since I came to United States, we had been busy. But in Canada, we could relax. We walked very slowly. We went toward waterfalls.
Before we arrived at the waterfalls, we saw deers. They were a parent and a baby. The baby suckled. He was really cute. Of course, they were wild animals, but they seemed like pets.

8/23カナダIn the afternoon, we went to Canada. The national park extends through the United States and Canada. Ito-chan’s friends said the Canadian side was better than the American side. The American side was beautiful enough, so I couldn’t imagine how beautiful the Canadian side was. I thought I definitely went to Canada.

The road to Canada was really pastoral. We could see many cows and horses along the road. Of course, they were farm animals but they didn’t seem farm animals. They had a big land. There was a fence along the road, but they went over the fence. They seemed happier than Japanese cows.

We crossed over the borderline and showed our passports. The immigration officer was friendly. He asked us a couple of questions and Mike-san answered. He was surprised that my passport got an IC chip. Umm… My passport is cool, isn’t it?

8/24カヌーマイクさんNext, Ito-chan and Mike-san row the canoe and I sat down the center seat. It was really convenient and comfortable. I just looked at mountains, our hotel, trees, the lake and so on. It was a big difference from rowing a boat in Kurondo-lake.
We stopped at the next boatslip. A couple was kayaking. It seemed like fun, but my bad experience reminded me I couldn't steer a boat. I guess it is better no to kayak.
Ito-chan changed to me and I rowed a canoe again.

There was a waterfall at the edge of the lake, so we had to row harder. I pictured in my head one scene of ‘River of No Return’. Anyway, we got back to our hotel safely.

MONTANA-8/24-3-

(2006-10-24)

8/24湖We got on the canoe again. That time, I sat down the back seat of the canoe. It means I had to steer.
Have you ever steered a boat? It was really difficult. The canoe didn’t move straight. The canoe turned around at the same point. I got really tired. I guess Mike-san also.
Anyway, we rowed the canoe and looked at beautiful views. The lake was clear and some fish were jumping. We could see seaweeds.
We arrived at the next boatslip. We wasted lot of time to get there because I couldn’t steer well. We tried to get there several times but we couldn’t. Finally, Mike-san steered and arrived at the boatslip from the back. I think the boys in Tokyo Disneyland are very good canoeists.

8/23カヌーThey came back within 30 minutes. That day’s plan was canoeing.
One of my favorite activities is canoeing, but it is only in Disneyland. You can rent a canoe in front of the hotel. We rented for 2 hours.
The weather was calm. Our canoe glided over the water. First, Mike-san and I rowed the canoe and went to opposite of the lake. There was a small boatslip there. The lake wasn’t too big, but it wasn’t small. When we got there, my arms said they were tired.
Some people walked around there. You can get there on foot from the hotel.

8/24朝On the 24th.
When I woke up, I could listen to Ito-chan and Mike-san talking. But nobody was in the room. I changed clothes quickly and went outside. I looked for Ito-chan and Mike-san but I couldn’t find them.

I walked along the lake. It was a fine day. Many people went outside and looked at the mountains and the lake.

I walked around the hotel, and tried to look inside of our room from outside. I thought if Ito-chan came back, I had to go back to my room. I checked each window because I didn’t know which one was ours.
A man stood on a bed and wiped his body.
He was naked!!
Oh, I was so sorry. I thought I was rude.
I stopped looking at inside of rooms.
I went back to our room and was waiting for Ito-chan and Mike-san there.

MONTANA-8/23-17-

(2006-10-21)
Ito-chan and Mike-san was still eating dinner, but I got back to the room. I was really sleepy. I went to the bathroom and filled the bathtub with hot water. When I went to the bathroom, I kept opening the door a little. As I said, the bathroom door was dangerous.
I took off my clothes and had a soak.

I realized I left a shampoo outside. I stood up and tried to go out the bathroom. Then I broke down the balance and pushed the door!!!

Oh, my gush!!
The door was closed!
I got panicky. I pushed, pulled the door again, but of course, it didn’t open.
I could listen to a voice from the next door. I knocked the wall and said, “Hello, is anybody there?” But no one answered. I opened the window and shout. But no one answered. I thought I would wait until Ito-chan and Mike-san came back. But I didn’t know when they would come back. I thought they might go to a bar and drink.
I tried to open the door one more time. I pushed, pulled and turn the knob. Then, the door opened suddenly.
I was safe. I could go outside. I was really happy but tired. I didn’t wash my hair, and went to sleep.
Even if I went to bed early, I couldn’t sleep. The hotel was really old, and footsteps were noisy.
Ito-chan and Mike-san came back. I didn’t know what time it was. Finally, I wore stopple and I fell asleep.

8/23ホテル外観Our room was in a basement. I felt a bad feeling. The steps were really old. If you jumped there, the step would be broken. The hallway was painted white, but it was still dark. I felt some kinds of criminals. The doors seemed doors in an old hospital. The inside of the room was still suspicious. It seemed that it was used as a sickroom during a war. I felt I could see an injured soldier.
I went to a bathroom. The bathroom was nicer. There was a big bath tab there.
But!! When I tried to go out from the bathroom, the door wasn’t opened. Yes! The door was broken!!! I push, pull and turn the knob several times, but the door didn’t open. Finally, Mike-san opened it from the outside and I could escape from the bathroom. The bathroom was really dangerous.

8/23湖We left there and drove again.

We stopped at a shop. Ito-chan bought some bread. I'm not sure but I didn’t buy anything there.
Some people looked at the mountain. I wanted to know what they were looking at, but I didn’t ask. I thought they looked at Mountain goat or something.

We arrived at Many Glacier Hotel. To go to Many Glacier Hotel, you should go out the Glacier National Park once, and go in to the national park again. Many Glacier Hotel is a typical lakeside hotel. We could see a beautiful lake and a mountain behind the hotel. The hotel seemed it had a long history.

The inside of the hotel was really nice. There was a fireplace in a lobby. The hotel was a wooden architecture. The ceiling was really high. The pillars were thick.

8/23滝We went to the next waterfalls. The next one was a little far. We had to walk about 10 or 15 minutes. The trail was a little rough and steep. According to Ito-chan, that area was called Sunrift Gorge. While I was walking, I could listen to the sound of water. Some grasses were really tall, so we had to push through those grasses. When I saw a river, I felt relief.

We arrived at the waterfalls called Baring Falls in a few minutes. I touched water. The water was cold and the stream was fast.
Ito-chan taught me an interesting thing. When I look at the waterfall with field glasses, I move the field glasses as a stream of the waterfalls runs. So, I can feel I slide on the water. I can see the drop of water.
It was very exciting, especially falling into the basin of a waterfall.

When I realized, Mike-san climbed the rocks and approached the waterfalls. Mike-san sometimes does those kinds of things.

Some people visited there. They came after us and they left before us. It was like a song of Mito-Koumon.

MONTANA-8/23-13

(2006-10-16)

8/23山2We walked too slowly when we climbed up, so we had to walk fast when we went back. We sometimes stopped and looked at animals.
A few heatless people went out of the trail. They took went to an unpermitted place and took pictures. It was really rude. Only one behavior will destroy beautiful nature. A man climbed over the heaps of rubble. He was crazy. He wanted to approach big hone sheep, but when he reached at the top, big hone sheep had already gone.

8/23駐車場
We arrived at the visitor center. Many people were still there. A woman fed an animal. I hope nobody follow her. We took a break and left there.
We went forward the hotel where we would stay.

8/23ジャーキーWe arrived at Hidden lake. It was that day’s goal. I had thought the trail ended there, but the trail continued.
It was the lunchtime. We ate lunch on a small rock. Many small animals came and greeted. I think it was ‘columbian ground squirrel’. They were really cute. First, they looked at us from a distance, but they approached us bit by bit. Finally, they thought we might be one of the rock.

8/23ゆきちゃNI saw a bunch of people again. There was a hill along the trail, and a mountain goat was on the hill. I shouted, “Don’t go! Don’t go!” in my mind. But they went away. I was very disappointed.
But we could see the mountain goat soon. There were so many mountain goats there. They were eating grasses. They lived with their family. I could see baby goats, too. The baby seemed like ‘Yuki-chan’ in Heidi. The baby was really cute. They weren’t scared at human. They walked a human’s trail as their own road. They were wild animals, but they seemed like sheep in Rokkou meadow.

MONTANA-8/23-10-

(2006-10-13)

8/23山We looked at the views carefully and stopped several times to take pictures. The boards ended. We walked on a ground afterwards. When we saw a bunch of people, it was the sign of animals. We could see big horn sheep again. They were on a cliff. They were really cool. They seemed like a small spot. I thought if I lived there, my near sight would be better.

We had already reached heights, so there was no high mountain around there. We could look at far away. We could look down a beautiful river, forest and lake. I felt I was one part of nature.
A big bird, maybe it was the golden eagle, was flying. It was cool. I think it looked down his territory. It didn’t move its wings. It seemed it was floated on an air.

MONTANA-8/23-9-

(2006-10-11)

8/23鳥We could see beautiful flowers. According to my guidebook, the early in the summer is more beautiful. We could see strange birds. The size of birds is a little smaller than dove. They had black cute eyes. I think it was the bird called ‘white-tailed ptarmigan’. They didn’t escape even if we approached them. They pecked the ground and ate something. We looked at them for a while.

8/23ビッグホーンシープWe started walking. The first part of the trail was covered by boards. It was easy for us to walk on the boards. Many elderly people and kids were walked there. I was surprised because I met the first animals soon. There was a bunch of people on the trail, and they looked at the one point. I looked at the area they pointed out.
Sheep!!! There were the big hone sheep there. It was really close. I hadn’t thought I could see wild animals easily, so I was really excited. Fist, the sheep lay down, but when we looked at him, he stood up suddenly. If I translate what he was saying, he might say, “Look at me. Take a picture”.

8/23りすFinally, we arrived at Logan Pass Visitor Center. There is the most popular trail called Hidden Lake Nature Trail in Glacier. The parking area was crowded. We had to look for a parking space.
First we visited the visitor center. The altitude was 2025m. The atmosphere was fresh. I felt I was refreshed by the clean air.
There was a garden around the visitor center. A small animal was waiting for us there.

8/23グレイシャー4The road was winding. Mike-san drove slow and carefully. Mike-san said it was stressful. I only looked at the views. Looking at the views didn’t make me tired.
Mike-san pointed out the middle of mountain. The cars were running there. It seemed very high, so I wanted to know how they got there. I was speechless because of surprise.
But later, we got there. I thought some people were laughing at our driving.

MONTANA-8/23-5-

(2006-10-07)

8/23グレイシャー3We left there and were going to drive. According to Ito-chan, there was only one road in Glacier because of to protect a nature. So, every car runs on the same road. The mountains were magnificent. They weren’t like Japanese mountains. The mountains had many faces. Sometimes I could see trees, and sometimes there was no tree and I could only see red ground and rocks. The mountains were very high. I felt they closed in.

We stopped several times.
We could see a river. The river had a special power; it made us relaxed. The river wasn’t wide. It ran fast through rocks. There were many small waterfalls. The surfaces of rocks were smooth. I felt long lapse of time.

MONTANA-8/23-4-

(2006-10-05)

8/23グレイシャー2First, we visited a visitor center.
There was the lake called Lake McDonald near the visitor center. The lake said, ” Welcome”. It was a blue lake. I could see mountains behind the lake. I felt I was in a wonderland.
Ito-chan asked about Glacier National Park at the visitor center. There were a lot of trails in the park. A man recommended some trails. He said we needed to stay more three months to know Glacier.

8/23グレイシャー地図Finally, we would go to Glacier National Park!!!!

It wasn’t far from Whitefish to Glacier National Park. We arrived at Glacier National Park soon. When I saw a sign of Glacier National Park, I was really excited, because I had wanted to visit a national park, and, finally, my dream came true.

We went through the west entrance. Many cars went into Glacier National Park. We didn’t see a lot of people before we got there. I thought Glacier was a popular sightseeing spot.

8/23うさぎMike-san woke up, too, and we ate breakfast. Ito-chan and I wanted to eat bread that we bought last night, but we realized that we had to eat pizza that Ito-chan left two days ago. Pizza was good, but it was very heavy for breakfast.

We saw a rabbit from the house. It was eating its breakfast in a garden. The rabbit was the one that Ito-chan saw in that morning. It was really cute. It was only eating. Its mouth didn’t stop. I had never seen a wild rabbit before. I had a lot of first experiences since I got to the U.S.

We packed our luggage and left North Forty Resort.

Finally, we would go to Glacier National Park!!!!

8/23朝On the 23rd.
I couldn’t sleep all over the night. I read a book for one night.
Ito-chan woke up around 5:00a.m.. We talked about our memory and our friends. We usually have no chance to talk, so I was happy to talk to her.
Around 6:00a.m., we went outside and walked. Ito-chan saw a rabbit, but I couldn’t
Outside was really cold. We thought that we wore enough, but it wasn’t enough. We had to walk fast.
It was cold but a refreshing morning. I couldn’t see any animals but I could feel whiff of animals. The trail wasn’t long. We got back soon. Another visitor was ready to leave. We had to leave there soon, too.

8/22wasabiThere was a mirror above a kitchen. I could see how to make Sushi by the mirror. It was a really good idea. Japanese Shushi restaurants should follow it. We ordered some Sushi. Rolled Sushi was different from Japanese rolled Sushi. Japanese rolled Sushi is always rapped by ‘nori’, but American rolled Sushi was rapped by rice.

I remembered that my mother made rolled Sushi sometimes. She rolled Vienna sausage, a cucumber and pickled Japanese radish. They were colorful and delicious. I liked them.

The rice was grasped a little hard. I think they have to train in Japan. Two guys made Suishi, but one guy was a new man. The other gut taught him how to make Sushi.
